Birdwatching in the Sandspit Area
E-mail Print PDF

Eagle in a treeSandspit is one of the best areas on Haida Gwaii for birdwatching.  Migratory species passing by the islands often use the "Spit", the end of the peninsula where the airport is located, as a resting point on their journey.  Species that are rare or unknown on the rest of the islands are sometimes sighted on the Spit, which is a nice relaxing walking trail.

Shorebirds are also spotted along the Sandspit beach, and sea ducks flock in front of the town, especially in the winter and spring.  Farther off shore, seabirds such as murrelets, shearwaters, and storm petrels are common in the spring, and are often sighted on trips to Gwaii Haanas and area.

A unique experience for the truly dedicated birdwatcher is a week of volunteering at Limestone Island, a research station operated by the Laskeek Bay Conservation Society.  This small island to the south of Sandspit is home to a nesting colony of ancient murrelets, monitored by biologists and volunteers in the spring.  Its also a great place to view other seabirds and songbirds.
